They meet every Thursday down by the pond at Old Man Johnson’s farm. Mary is related to the Johnsons in some distant way, so the old man lets them swim there. He find their bare ankles thrilling and a bit naughty. It is 1919 and the girls have somehow lived through The Great War and the Spanish flu. They are amazed that they have survived when so many died. Nancy’s brother Tommy died in the Ardennes and Janet’s father is still over there in a French hospital somewhere. But on this day, they are happy to just be with friends and go for a swim on a warm summer day.
